How to maintain your tea towels

Tea towels are pretty simple to wash and maintain. However, there are some good tips and tricks to ensure your tea towels keep their good quality and absorbency. After many washes, the absorbency of the small kitchen towel can weaken.

The first time you use the tea towel

Place the tea towel in cold water before use. Before using the tea towel for the first time, it is a good idea to soak it in cold water for about 24 hours. By doing this, the cotton fibres in the tea towel will open up and remove any excess colour so it doesn't leave marks. After the tea towel has been in the cold water, wash and dry it - and it's ready to use.

Change your tea towel regularly

Change your tea towels often and have a tea towel for different uses. A tea towel should be cleaned often, and while they don't need to be changed daily like dishcloths, it's a good idea to change your tea towel every half to full week. To avoid germs, it's also a good idea to have a tea towel for drying your hands and a separate tea towel for drying your crockery.

Easy washing and maintenance of cotton tea towels

It's important to maintain your tea towels, especially if they're bought in high quality, to ensure they stay neat and effective for many years. Maintenance is not the same for all tea towels but instead depends on the material. Cotton tea towels should be washed at a minimum of 60 degrees to maintain the softness and drying properties. If the tea towel hasn't been washed for a while, it may be a good idea to wash it at 90 degrees to ensure all bacteria are removed.

Maintain the quality of the tea towel after many washes

Add a little vinegar to the wash. Although vinegar can break down the softening elements of the towel, it actually improves the drying ability of the towel. Therefore, if you want a highly absorbent towel, you can choose to compromise on the soft towel.
